What Molina announced

Molina Healthcare confirmed it will exit its Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MAPD) business for the 2027 plan year, a product line representing roughly $1 billion in annual premiums. The company said MAPD no longer fits its strategy, which is now built entirely around dual-eligible members who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid.

Molina says about 99,100 members currently carry a Molina individual Medicare Advantage plan. Those plans are currently sold in about 20 states nationwide. Current coverage stays in force through the end of 2026; the plans simply won't be offered again starting in 2027.

Why it's happening

Unlike some carriers cutting only their weakest-performing plans, Molina is dropping the entire traditional MAPD product line, everywhere it's sold. The company has already been moving in this direction: on January 1, 2026, it finished shifting members in five states onto integrated dual-eligible special needs plans, a business it now considers its long-term Medicare focus.

This wasn't the first sign of the shift. Molina had already discontinued its individual Medicare Advantage plans in Virginia back in mid-2025, well before the full 2027 exit was announced.

The exit followed a rocky earnings report, and Molina has also been pulling back in its ACA marketplace business for similar reasons, choosing to concentrate capital where it's more confident in the underlying risk pool rather than spread itself across products it sees as underperforming.

Molina isn't alone in trimming 2027 Medicare Advantage offerings. Humana, Presbyterian Health Plan, and others have announced similar reductions for the same plan year, part of a broader pullback across the industry.

Who's affected

  • You're affected if you're on a Molina individual Medicare Advantage (MAPD) plan, the traditional plans built around Medicare Part C and Part D benefits.
  • You're not affected if you're on a Molina Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan (D-SNP) for members with both Medicare and Medicaid. That business is staying, and is where Molina is putting its long-term focus.

If you're not sure which type of plan you have, check your Molina member ID card, or The Medicare Store can look it up for you at no charge.

Key dates to know

  • Fall 2026: Health plans are federally required to mail non-renewal notices to members whose plans are being discontinued for 2027.
  • December 31, 2026: Coverage under a discontinued Molina MAPD plan ends.
  • October 15 to December 7, 2026: The Annual Enrollment Period, when you can choose a new Medicare Advantage or Part D plan for coverage starting January 1, 2027.
  • January 1, 2027: New coverage takes effect.

What to do now

  1. Step 1: Confirm which type of plan you have.

MAPD and D-SNP plans are affected differently. Check your ID card or call to confirm before assuming you need to switch.

  2. Step 2: Compare new plans during the Annual Enrollment Period.

You're not required to accept whatever replacement plan Molina points you toward. Between October 15 and December 7, you can compare Medicare Advantage and Part D options from any carrier available in your area.

  3. Step 3: Ask about a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan.

Because your carrier is leaving this market, you likely qualify for guaranteed-issue rights, meaning you can enroll in a Medicare Supplement Plan A, B, C, D, F, G, K, or L without medical underwriting. This window typically runs from 60 days before your plan ends to 63 days after.

  4. Step 4: Get help from a licensed agent.

With several carriers pulling back for 2027 at once, it's worth comparing carefully rather than defaulting to the first plan you're offered. A licensed insurance agent can walk you through your options without steering you toward one company.

Bottom line

If you have Molina Medicare Advantage and it's going away in 2027, you don't need to worry, because you'll still be able to enroll in a new plan without problems.

If you need help comparing plans or finding coverage that fits you better, book an appointment with our team of licensed insurance agents and we'll help you find new Medicare Advantage coverage before your Molina plan ends.
